Thunderstorm sounds
Recorded rain with thunder at random moments. Every strike fades in, never cracks; set how often and how far away.
Thunder mixes real thunder strikes into recorded rain at random moments, so it can't be shown as a short sample here. You can hear the rain underneath it below.
About this sound
A storm with steady rain and thunder that rolls in at random moments. Two controls set how often thunder comes and how far away it sounds. This sound plays only in the app; there is no player on this page because the storm is assembled live.
The rain is the same real recording as the Rain sound. The thunder is eight strikes cut from a dry storm recorded with no rain, each given a short fade at the start. The app drops them in at random: on average every 75 seconds at the calm end and every 15 seconds at the busy end, never closer than 8 seconds apart. Each strike plays at 80 to 100 percent of its recorded speed (slower is lower and rounder) and always fades in. Distance moves the filter from about 5 kHz down to 400 Hz, lowers the level and makes the fade slower, so far thunder is a soft rumble.
How people use it
Sudden loud sounds are what wake people, so for sleep keep the storm far and calm: Distance high, Storm Rate low. Closer, busier storms are better for reading or relaxing in the evening.
The app's Cabin in a Storm mix pairs it with rain on the roof and a fireplace, with thunder far away. As with any sound, keep the volume low and use a sleep timer with a slow fade if you only need it to fall asleep.
Questions
Will the thunder wake me up?
Every strike fades in instead of cracking, and far thunder is filtered and quieter. Set Distance high and Storm Rate low for the gentlest storm.
Does the thunder repeat?
There are eight different strikes, each played at a slightly different speed and filter at random times, so the storm does not settle into a pattern.
