Fireplace sounds
A wood fire burning in a fireplace, crackling and settling.
About this sound
A wood fire burning in a fireplace: a soft roar of flames, logs settling and the crackle of burning wood, with no music on top.
From an hour-long recording we chose the most even 10 minutes, filtered the rumble below 30 Hz, balanced left and right, and softened the pops that jumped more than 18 dB above the fire so none of them startles you. The app plays random stretches of about half a minute joined with 4-second crossfades and a gentle drift in volume. The player on this page uses a 2-minute excerpt. The recording is licensed CC BY; the credit is shown with it.
How people use it
A fire is warm and cozy for winding down, reading or a winter evening. The crackles are separate events, so for the middle of the night it works best quietly under a steadier sound.
The app's Fireside mix adds a purring cat and a little rain; Cabin in a Storm puts it with rain on the roof and distant thunder.
Keep it low so the crackles stay in the background, and let a slow-fading sleep timer end it.
Questions
Will the crackling wake me up?
The loudest pops in the recording were softened, so the crackle stays inside the sound of the fire. Keep the volume low for sleep.
Is it a real fire?
Yes, a real wood fire, recorded for an hour, of which we use the most even 10 minutes.
