Rain on a roof

Rain on the roof, heard from the attic underneath. Even and close, with no thunder.

About this sound

Rain falling on a roof, heard from the attic underneath: an even, close patter with the roof itself softening the drops, and no thunder.

We took the steadiest part of the original, about 5 minutes, filtered out the rumble below 40 Hz, partly evened out the level and softened a few isolated knocks that stood out. The app plays random stretches of about half a minute joined with 4-second crossfades and a gentle drift in volume. The player on this page uses a 2-minute excerpt. The recording is licensed CC BY; the credit is shown with it.

How people use it

Rain on the roof is the sound of being safe inside, which is why it is one of the most requested sleep sounds. It covers voices and household noise well.

The app's Cabin in a Storm mix pairs it with distant thunder and a fireplace. For sleep, keep the thunder far and calm, the volume low and the speaker away from your pillow.

Questions

Does it have thunder?

No. If you want a storm, add the Thunder sound in the app, where you can set how often it strikes and how far away it is.

Why do knocks not stand out?

A few single hits that were much louder than the rain were softened, because sudden jumps above the background are what wake people.
