About this sound
Rain on the roof and windows of a parked car, recorded from inside. The engine is off, so you hear only a soft, dense patter on metal and glass.
We chose a stretch of about 6 and a half minutes where the rain was even and lighter, filtered out the rumble below 40 Hz, partly evened out the level and gently limited the sharpest single drops. The app plays random stretches of about half a minute joined with 4-second crossfades and a gentle drift in volume. The player on this page uses a 2-minute excerpt.
How people use it
Many people remember falling asleep in a car in the rain, and this sound is close and enclosed in the same way. It masks small sounds well without much low rumble.
The app's Night Drive mix layers it over the road hum of a car on the highway, as if driving through rain. Keep it low and away from your pillow.
It has little low end, so if you also need to cover traffic, put a little brown noise underneath.
Questions
Is the car moving?
No, it is parked with the engine off. For a moving car, mix it with Night Drive.
Why does it sound softer than open rain?
The car body and glass take the edge off the drops, and the sharpest single drops were gently limited, so the patter is dense and even.
