About this sound
Wind moving through a forest: a soft rushing in the trees that swells and settles, with no rain and no birds.
The original is a strong wind, so we joined two calmer parts and left out the hardest gusts, filtered the rumble below 30 Hz and partly evened out the level. The app uses about 6 minutes of it, played as random stretches of about half a minute with 4-second crossfades, and gives it a slightly deeper slow drift in volume than the other recordings, so it keeps breathing like real wind. The player on this page uses a 2-minute excerpt.
How people use it
Wind is less even than rain, so it masks a little less, but many people find its rise and fall restful. It is a good layer for other outdoor sounds.
The app's Tent in the Rain mix puts wind quietly behind rain on a tent. Keep it low; if the swells catch your attention, turn the Tone control down or add brown noise underneath.
Questions
Will sudden gusts wake me?
The strongest gusts in the original were left out and the level was partly evened, so the wind swells gently rather than in sudden blasts.
Why does the volume change?
Real wind rises and falls. The app adds a slow, gentle drift on top so the sound keeps moving instead of freezing into a flat hiss.
