Train sounds

Inside a quiet intercity train at speed. A deep, steady rumble, no announcements.

A 2-minute recording played in random overlapping segments, the way the app plays it, so you won't hear a loop. Start with your volume low. Keep this tab open.

About this sound

Inside a quiet intercity train at speed: a deep, steady rumble of the wheels and carriage, with no announcements and no passing trains.

We joined two parts of the original with a 3-second crossfade to leave out a train going past, fixed a phase problem between the channels, repaired small clicks and partly evened out the level. The app uses about 5 minutes of it, played as random stretches of about half a minute joined with 4-second crossfades and a very slight drift in volume. The player on this page uses a 2-minute excerpt.

How people use it

A train has the steady low rumble of brown noise with a sense of travel, which many people find easy to drift off to. It covers low sounds like traffic well.

The app's Night Train mix adds a little rain on top, as if it were raining on the windows. Keep the volume low and use a sleep timer with a slow fade.

Questions

Is it a real train?

Yes, recorded inside an intercity train. We tried generating a train, but the rhythm sounded artificial, so this one stays a recording.

Are there announcements or doors?

No. Only the train in motion, with a passing train cut out.

Does it loop?

Not audibly. The app plays random parts of about 5 minutes of recording, joined with 4-second crossfades, and each part comes back only after most of the others.
